LIKE TO FILL THE SHOES OF BOB HOPE?

Doing what? What else? To entertain our troops in Afghanistan, of course.

No, can't do. Though as much as I'd like to, I can't tell jokes like Bob.

No problem. We have a "Joke-a-Day" calendar with 365 jokes, one for each day. Originally published for 1963, the dates now are a perfect match for 2002. Simply sending the calendars to our troops, you're doing them a favor as Bob did, if not better, because your donation will be entertaining them everyday. Imagine the rugged mountains in icy winter with land mines everywhere! Who wouldn't appreciate to start the day there with a little humor?

Wouldn't the other feature of this vintage calendar, "Girl-a-Week," offend our women in uniform? No, not at all. In fact, that was conceptualized by a poem of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "If eyes were made for seeing then Beauty has its own excuse for being."

According to DoD, some people donated food and others clothing. Our military is well equipped, needing neither extra food nor clothing to jeopardize the movement. What's needed mostly is entertainment. Since Bob Hope is no longer available to do what he was so proud of doing time and again, anyone to fill his shoes would enjoy a feeling of honor not perceived by any other means.

Besides the story behind this Americana calendar, an immigrant's struggle, symbolizes freedom and opportunity. In the words of Studs Terkel, Pulitzer-prize winning author, the story of this calendar should belong in his book, AMERICAN DREAMS: LOST & FOUND. AREN'T FREEDOM AND AMERICAN DREAMS WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING TERRORISM FOR?
